    Default Newbie Hertfordshire

Hello, I have just bought a HPI Baja 5B SS, just the kit, - after literally hunting the globe for one and finally finding a shop in Finland with stock! I now need to get radio gear etc and wondered what you guys recommend?

Any other accessories or additions that you recommend?

Also, are there any tracks or good running spots in Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire?

    Thank you for any advise

    Welcome to BFUK siholley

the fav tx of choice seems to be the futaba 3pl as a good alround starter tx
    http://www.futabarc.com/systems/futk1300.html

main no1 addition should be a kill switch, which lets you cut the engine if case of any problems like a runaway, servo glitchout etc

Thank you both for the welcome and the advice. I have ordered the kill switch, but I can't find any retailer still offering the transmitter! Is it an older unit?

Yeah mate it was an older handset 3 channel which worked well with killswitches used to be able to pick them up around a hundred etc seems this is the replacement version
    https://wheelspinmodels.co.uk/i/263835/

but ive never owned one so you may be better off posting in electrics section and asking the lads what they use etc I know a few who are running the futuba 4pk which is a amazing tx but costs a bit lol
depends what your budget is matey

    Welcome Siholley.
As BajaDre says above.....yes the 3pl was an excellent choice of radio for the price, range and reliability . I have owned one for a few years and it's still going strong today, but yes it's an older model now and was superceded by the Futaba T3PV.
The 3PL's do occasionally pop up for sale on eBay ...still at a good price.
The T3PV has some good reviews and as Dre says , I've never owned one either, but if it was designed to take over from the 3PL then I don't think it's going to be any worse, but rather an improvement. My only niggle with the 3PL was the display was a little tiny and feeble...the new T3PV has a larger display.

I think the link that Dre has posted up above for it is a super price and I think it should be very good value for the money. It does still use the same receiver as the 3PL.

Thank you all for your advice and assistance, I really appreciate it!
Just one last question... why do you all seem to prefer the Futaba as opposed to the Spektrum?
In most ads I have seen for the buggy it's the Spektrum that is always offered as a package?

During the years that I have been a member of this forum I can't ever recall reading of any one ever having an issue with a Futaba system. I can't say the same for the Spektrums. Range and glitching problems seem to be mentioned more so. Never had a Spekky myself so I can't say how they are , but had the Futaba and it's been a little gem.

We've had discussions and polls over the two radios many times and the Futabas allways seem to come up Top trump between users.

I had a Spektrum for my first radio with the Baja, it was junk. Brand new out of the box it wouldn't bind so I sent it back spent a bit more on a 4PLS and never looked back, works flawlessly.

Thanks Milodan. I have probably over researched this now but have found something like 55% vs 45% in favour of Futaba but it's actually quite a close run thing. Appears the early Spektrum were bad which gave them a bad name but later models are fine. The feel of a Spektrum seems to be better accepted vs a cheap feel to the Futaba.
From my buying perspective the Spektrum seems easier to find online and buy as it typically forms a standard package with a Baja 5B SS including receiver and battery pack etc But with the Futaba you need to then research which receiver and battery pack etc which puts me off. Confused.com but currently thinking Spektrum for ease of package!

Your choice mate, my Futaba feels way better quality than the Spektrum did. You get all the bits Rx and Tx that you need with the package. You just need to shop around. Post your questions and choices in the right section with links then we can comment and help you.

But ultimately it's your hard cash.
