Cool Mesh Mod - crank case & pullstart

    What you will need:

Mesh 1.89 from Halfords, plenty here to do 2 crank case's & pullstarts.
Blue Araldite you can use the red but it goes off quicker so the blue is easier to work with but may take 24hrs till it goes off.
    • Scissor for cutting mesh, it's aluminum so very soft to cut.

This is a very simple mod to do, the crank case can take around half hour and so does the pullstart.

    Crank case mesh mod:

Cut mesh to desired size, you will need to cut 3 pieces for the crank case,
lay them on dry first molding the mesh to the shape of the casing.

Once your happy with the shape and size,
apply your glue onto the crankcase,
then lay your mesh on top of the glue.
Something i did to help adhere the mesh better was to apply more glue over the top of the mesh once it was in place.

    Pullstart mesh mod:

Bit more fiddly this one and more involved,
You'll need to cut and place mesh on the inside of the pullstart.
As you can see in the pics, this was originally done so that the 4 bolts that hold the pullstart on also hold the mesh in.
I found it a lot easier to remove the mesh from around the holes and just glue the mesh straight to the pullstart.

Got my mesh mod ready as well

I glued it with Bison 2-component Metal Glue, a bit messy but really strong.

I let the mesh go up even higher on the engine, to really avoid small rocks getting in just underneath the cylinder head (and not getting out anymore due to the meshing).
I also noticed I've already lost 1 blade on the flywheel. Guess I can do without that one.

could you not do the crank case mod on the inside to make it look a little cleaner
or would it just end up getting pushed into the fly wheelif a stone hit it

I guess you could, but imagine the disaster if it comes loose on the inside :boxed:
Like you said, if a stone hits it...

For me it's fine like this, it doesn't even show when the engine is in the car.

great mod one of the first things i have done to my baja. Simple, straight forward and no more removing the plastic engine shroud to remove the build up of grass

Just to add you can also grab the mesh from JDM Performance (online) just in case your Halfrauds don't have it in stock.

Good job there Dan and looks neat

Doesn't really matter what it looks like, as long as it's functional no one will see it once it's fitted
